What Does Garden Maintenance Actually Cost in Nelson and Tasman?

Let's be upfront about something. When people search "how much does garden maintenance cost in Nelson," they're usually hoping for a simple number. A figure they can compare. A way to shop around.
And look — we get it. But if you've ever hired the cheapest option and ended up worse off than when you started, you already know that price is only part of the story.
There's an old saying in the trades: Good, Fast, Cheap — pick two.
Want it done well and quickly? It's going to cost you. Want it cheap and quick? Don't expect quality. Want it done properly at a fair price? Give it the time it deserves. This isn't a Roots & Rise rule. It's just reality — in Nelson, in Tasman, and everywhere else.
What Happens When You Pick "Cheap"
A few months ago, we were called into a property to look at a slope that had been "prepared" by another contractor. The client had paid for weed matting and bark mulch. On paper, it sounded like a solid job.
What we found was something else entirely. The weed matting was essentially the gardening equivalent of a cotton jersey t-shirt — flimsy, light, tears at a glance. Underneath it, the weeds hadn't been killed or even cut back. They were sitting there at full strength, completely intact, just waiting. On top of the matting was the thinnest skiff of bark you've ever seen — not nearly enough weight to suppress anything. Within less than a month, weeds were pushing through everywhere.
The client was understandably gutted. Honestly? If it had been our garden, we'd have been livid. The worst part: they'd already paid for it.
What "Done Properly" Actually Looks Like
Start with the weeds, not the matting. Line trim right down to the ground — leave nothing to feed the plant. Then go in with a desiccant like Weed Weapon to really knock them back before anything goes over the top.
Use quality weed matting. At Roots & Rise, we don't use plastic weed matting. Yes, it's cheaper. But every single type of weed matting — plastic, organic, biodegradable — eventually breaks down. Plastic just leaves microplastics behind in your soil, and we've done enough damage to this planet.
Put enough bark on top — weight matters. A thin skiff of bark isn't suppressing anything. And be realistic with your timeframe. A proper slope job takes the time it takes. We'd rather underpromise and overdeliver than rush through and leave you with a mess.
How We Approach Pricing
Here's where we'll be straightforward with you. We work on a half day and full day rate structure — everything included. Petrol, all power tools, and the expertise of someone who genuinely knows what they're doing. Green waste removal is included too, so you're not left with a pile at the end of your driveway.
For larger jobs — slope preparation, garden transformations, new builds — we start with a free initial consultation. Every property in Nelson and Tasman is different. The clay soil in one area behaves completely differently to the free-draining ground somewhere else. We need to see your space before we can tell you what it needs.
After that consultation, we send you a written summary of everything we discussed — so nothing gets lost in translation and we're both completely clear on priorities, scope, and expectations before a single tool comes out of the van.
If you're looking for a budget gardener, we're not that. We know what we're doing, we're good at it, and we bring a level of care to this region that we genuinely feel has been missing.
The Hidden Costs of Doing It Cheaply
Replanting dead plants. Nelson is the sunniest region in New Zealand. You cannot put a shade-loving plant in full baking sun and expect it to survive. When someone plants the wrong thing in the wrong place, you pay twice — once for the plant that died, and again for the one that replaces it.
Foundation damage from the wrong plants. Wisteria is beautiful. It's also relentless. Plant it too close to your house and it will find its way into your foundations.
Reset pavers and pathways. Tree roots don't care about your paving. Plant the wrong species in the wrong spot and eventually you're paying a landscaper to lift and relay your whole path.
Repeating work that wasn't done right the first time. This is the big one. The slope job above had to be completely redone. That client paid for it twice.
The Thing Nobody Tells You About "Low Maintenance" Gardens
We hear this all the time: "I just want something low maintenance." Here's the truth: there is no such thing as a zero-maintenance garden. Even ornamental grasses — which are genuinely low maintenance once established — still need their seed heads cut back when they go crispy, and still need watering while they're getting established.
Ornamental grasses are drought tolerant because their roots run deep. But when a plant comes straight out of a nursery pot, those roots are tiny. Treating a brand new plant like it's drought tolerant is one of the most common ways to lose them — especially here in New Zealand's sunniest region.
Still On the Fence About the Cost?
You don't have to do it all at once. Even if you make your garden one percent better once a week, it adds up. Small progress is still progress.
What we will say is this — gardens don't wait. Everything keeps growing here. Nelson and Tasman don't really have a winter downtime the way colder parts of the country do. That's one of the most beautiful things about living here. It's also one of the most relentless.
